Because the interview had been cut short, she didn’t have the answer. It was information she had to obtain before day’s end. The Pettys were not good people. They were bigoted, disparaging, and envious. They could be cruel to children. To Jane, that meant they were capable of other, even more sinister cruelties.

“They’re the kind of people who cultivate negativity. They’re human poison ivy. And I need to invite them to have drinks with me,” Jane murmured miserably.

She called up to her great-aunt and great-uncle’s apartments. When Aunt Octavia answered, Jane said, “I need your help. Could you pretend to fawn over a loathsome pair of picture book authors in order to extract information from them? I wouldn’t ask if it weren’t important.”

After a pause, Aunt Octavia said, “You do realize that it’s my cocktail time.”

“Trust me, you’re going to need a stiff drink to face these guests. They’re horrid, but we need to impress them,” Jane said. “Tell Uncle Aloysius to break out the good stuff.”
